Staunton River State Park

Alcoa Supports Staunton River State Park!
A big thank you to the Alcoa employees in South Boston! They continue to support Staunton River State Park as part of Stewardship Virginia by planting oak trees for the wildlife area and helping with trail maintenance.

This is a great example of a business helping their community!

National Paper sets the Benchmark!
It's amazing to realize how much more International Paper does than just make paper. In addition to supporting the Love-a-Tree, Project WET, Project WILD and Project Learning Tree programs, IP reaches out to the community with educational programs. For the past 27 years, their Franklin Mill, along with Paul D. Camp Community College, has sponsored the Educator's Environmental Institute. In the two-week course, K-12 teachers tour the mill landfill, effluent system, and the mill itself. They visit surrounding ecosystems and gain an appreciation for how businesses balance industry and the environment. The Everwoods Nature Trail and Forestry Practices Area at the Franklin Mill is a diamond in the rough. It is used to teach about natural regeneration, managed pine, reforestation, streamside management and much more along the 26-stop educational trail. IP has also sponsored the Holiday Lake Forestry Camp since it began more than 50 years ago. The Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest provides an outdoor classroom for students to learn about fire tactics, ecology, wilderness survival and low ropes initiatives. There's even a lumberjack field day!

Phillip Morris Goes to School

Phillip Morris Goes to School!
Philip Morris Employees visited 100 Kindergarten students at Harrowgate Elementary School during Operation Spruce-Up. They read "How to Plant a Seed" with the students and then donated the books and a packet of seeds to the students for their participation in the volunteer effort. They also donated the Book, "Manatee on the Move" and a stuffed animal to each Kindergarten teacher. Many thanks to the volunteers at Philip Morris! What a great example of volunteering, mentoring and incorporating the standards of learning!

Greif Bros. Corporation - Riverville Mill Prevents Pollution
Greif Bros. Riverville Mill began manufacturing paper in 1975 and now averages 1200 tons of production a day. They produce 100% recycled liner and do it with an eye toward pollution prevention. Why not take a tour of the mill and see how it all works?
