Fort Defiance High School students place 12th in Envirothon
Fort Defiance placed 12th overall out of 41 states and 6 Canadian provinces at Canon International Envirothon . Envirothon is a natural resources competition for high school students. Teams of five students compete in the areas of soils, forestry, aquatics, and wildlife. Each year during the oral presentation component of the competition, teams are given the opportunity to propose a management solution to a panel of judges. (The panel consists of industry and natural resource professionals.)

The 2003 team from Fort Defiance are: Meagen Carpenter, Jeremy Arey, Aaron Shiflett, Nick Norman, Caitlyn McAnulty and Coach Brent Hull. The students have been studying Agricultural Land Conservation and Preservation in the Headwaters Soil and Water Conservation District to identify potential or existing environmental problems.

Virginia's state competition was held May 18-19, 2003 at the Airfield 4H Conference Center in Wakefield, where seventeen teams competed. The Fort Defiance Team placed first overall. As the state champions, Fort Defiance represented Virginia at the Canon International Envirothon held at Mt. Saint Mary’s College, in Emmitt Maryland, July 26 - August 1, 2003. The week's activities included the competition, a BBQ Picnic at Cunningham Falls State Park, a Crab Feast on the Chesapeake Bay, trips to Washington D.C., Gettysburg PA, local farms and the Catoctin Orchard.

Envirothon is sponsored by the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and Virginia’s 47 Soil and Water Conservation Districts with funding provided by the Virginia Manufacturers Association Outreach Group, Philip Morris, The Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund, Shenandoah Valley Pure Water Forum, Virginia Chapter of Soil and Water Conservation Society, The Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative, Virginia Beef Corporation and the Canon Envirothon.
