Salute to 2007 Environmental Stewards of Virginia’s environment:

Project Plant It
Congratulations to Dominion for organizing 'Project Plant It' last spring. Dominion created a partnership with Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield to teach school children the value of trees in our ecosystem. Third graders across the region learned that trees have many benefits. They improve air quality, absorb carbon, prevent soil erosion and reduce heating and cooling costs while providing habitat for wildlife. A total of 114 classrooms participated and 1,935 third-graders planted 487 blue spruce seedlings. Dominion awarded A.V. Norrell Elementary School a $500.00 educational grant for having planted the most trees (38) among City Schools.

DuPont Spruance Clean Up

DuPont Spruane Plant

Saturday, February 24th we held our annual clean-up day at the DuPont Spruance Site.  The letter below is a thank you note that I sent out to the site recognizing our volunteers.  The Spruance Plant is located adjacent to the James River south of Richmond. Of the site's 550 acres, approximately 250 are available for habitat management and enhancement. Of this, there are about 90 acres of forest habitat, 63 acres of open area, 50 acres of ponds and reservoirs, and the remainder in buffer lands between the forested and open areas.

Employees at the Spruance Plant have undertaken a variety of projects for the benefit of wildlife. Among them include a wildflower garden designed to attract butterflies and a nature trail. The team also monitors and maintains a network of 120+ nesting structures which result in an average of over 300 fledglings/season. A creek on site has been 'adopted' as part of a state program. The employees also audit the site for birds, fish, plants, and trees as well as other wildlife.
