The Roundtable is recruiting a new Office of Surface Mining/Volunteers In Service To America worker for Tazewell County. This is a new position and we'll have it for three years, but the worker only needs to commit to one year.

Watershed Development Coordinator with Office of Surface Mining/Volunteers In Service To America (OSM/VISTA) Watershed Team through the Upper Tennessee River Roundtable, Inc.

Office Location:  Town of Tazewell
Work Area: Tazewell County, VA
Program Start/End Date:  July 2007 and continue for 12 months
Terms:  Requires full-time service without outside commitments.  Must have own transportation.
Work Schedule:  Full-Time
Education Requirement:  Bachelor’s Degree
OSM/VISTA Background:  Unique partnership between AmeriCorps VISTA and the Office of Surface Mining, the Watershed Team seeks to place full-time VISTA volunteers in community watershed associations.  Volunteers are passionate advocates for environmental issues in their watersheds and play a key role in educating the public about litter prevention, acid mine drainage and other water quality issues.  For additional information visit the following website:  http://www.osmre.gov/vista/vistavolunteer.pdf
Duties:  The work of an OSM/VISTA is built around a set of “Core Goals:”
  1. Build capacity in the watershed organization.
  2. Organize the water quality monitoring critical  to future funding
  3. Reach out to youth and adults in their community to create awareness about watershed issues.
  4. Engage in economic revitalization efforts.
  5. Find the funds to keep all this critical work moving forward.

Program Benefits:  Living allowance (approx. $833/mos. before taxes), health insurance, childcare if eligible, student loan forbearance, choice of $1200 stipend or $4725 education award (upon successful completion of term), training and an opportunity to make a difference.
