EPA Region III Volunteer Water Monitoring Conference
Shenandoah University, October 12 - 13, 2007
Save the Date!
This conference will provide opportunities for the volunteer water quality monitoring community to meet and learn about monitoring efforts in nearby states. In addition, the Friends of the Shenandoah River (FOSR) is one of the hosts for this event and the "Water Window" developed using the FOSR and cooperating groups water quality data is going to be one of the featured topics. Also the idea of having a speaker to discuss the ongoing Fish Kills in the region is being actively pursued.
The Friday conference will feature workshops and breakout sessions while the Saturday events will include field trips and water quality workshops. Agenda and registration information will be available shortly. Please mark your calendars and pass along the "Save the Date" announcement to all on your email lists interested in Volunteer Water Monitoring in the Mid Atlantic: Citizen Scientists Involved in Their Local Watersheds.

Survey for Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE)
In April 2005, the Virginia Department of Education began collecting data on Virginia's progress toward meeting educational goals related to watersheds and related educational programs in the Commonwealth's schools. The survey was conducted again in April 2006. Using the Single Sign-on for Web Application Systems (SSWS), school divisions provided these data, which were reported to the Governor and the Chesapeake Bay Executive Council as part of the requirement of the multi-state 2000 Chesapeake Bay Agreement http://www.chesapeakebay.net/agreement.htm and the signed Chesapeake Watershed Education Agreement: Fostering Chesapeake Stewardship http://www.chesapeakebay.net/exec.htm.
The Department is again requesting that school divisions complete a short survey describing watershed and related educational activities. The Department is required to provide this information to the Governor each year.
For more information on completing the survey, please see Supt. Memo #98 at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/suptsmemos/2007/inf098.html.
